Seasonal Readiness
Living near the Rockies is a gift, and it comes with a weather forecast that can change in an afternoon. Hail, heavy snow, strong winds and dry fire seasons all ask something of a house. A little preparation helps you stay calm when conditions shift.
Look at the roof first
After any hailstorm, check the roof for dents, cracked shingles and damaged vents. Impact-resistant roofing materials add strong protection, and good attic ventilation reduces ice dams in winter. Clear the gutters before the first snow so meltwater has somewhere to go.
Preparation is a way of caring for your future self.
Make windows and doors work harder
Well-sealed, insulated windows keep heat in during cold snaps and reduce the effect of strong sun at altitude. Replace worn weatherstripping and check that locks and latches work smoothly.
Create defensible space
- Keep vegetation trimmed and spaced away from the house.
- Clear leaves and needles from roofs, gutters and decks.
- Store firewood and propane away from the building.
- Cover vents with fine metal screens to block embers.
Stay ready indoors
Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, keep an extinguisher near the kitchen and know where to meet your household in an emergency. Keep a go-bag with documents, medicines and essentials.
Review your coverage
Read your homeowner policy to see how hail, wind and wildfire damage are handled, and keep photos of your belongings in a safe place.
We would be glad to help you prepare your home for whatever the mountains send your way.
